Formulary Draft Rules

The passage of SB 1062 directed the Board to remove from rule the requirement for a specific prescribing formulary based on Drug Facts and Comparisons. At the April 10, 2008 meeting the Board approved draft amendments to Division 56 which would remove these references and replace sections of rule with general prescribing principles.

The Board was asked several questions to direct drafting of final rules. Final rules are scheduled to be adopted on June 12, 2008. The Board directed that:

  • FDA approval be retained as a requirement for prescribing
  • Exceptions to FDA approval be added to include expanded access and IRB authorized clinical trials
  • General exceptions based upon federal prohibitions be referenced but not exhaustively listed
  • Orphan drugs should be listed as specifically permitted for prescribing
Draft rules may be accessed on the Board's website at http://www.oregon.gov/OSBN/.

Tamper Proof Prescriptions

The Oregon State Board of Pharmacy has published new criteria which defines “tamper proof” prescriptions for the purpose of new federal regulations. The state of Oregon does not define a specific vendor which must be used. More information regarding this issue may be found at: http://www.oregon.gov/Pharmacy/TamperProofRx.shtml.

Continuing Education and Pain Management CE

The Board continues to receive many inquiries regarding the one time pain management CE requirement for all nurses as well as the CNS and NP specific continuing education requirements for renewal. Links to the Board's information regarding pain management CE may be found at:
