Getting to Know Our NPO Members

Who are you?

  • Kari M. Komlofske, MSN, APRN, FNP-C
  • A nurse and a mother.

Where did you receive your education?

  • BSN Linfield, College of Nursing; Portland, OR
  • MSN Washington State University, Vancouver, WA

What type of NP are you and where and what do you practice?

  • I have tailored my practice to the orthopedic patient. I am fortunate to practice primarily in an acute care setting at Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital, Clackamas, OR. I care for the acutely fractured patients, work in our trauma repatriation services, do consultations in the emergency department and new consults in the hospital. I manage a busy clinical practice as well as participating in clinic with our trauma surgeon one day per week.

How long have you been a member of NPO, what roles have you had?

  • I became a member in 2010 upon graduating with my MSN and becoming a certified FNP. I sat as a member and participated in meeting and the fiscal year in 2011 became the NPO Treasurer, a role in which I continue to serve.

What is one thing you’d be willing to share that others may not know?

  • I have two children. Brittany is my 19-year-old daughter attending the University of Oregon and rides for the Equestrian team in the jumper ring. Jackson is my 16-year-old son who is a junior at Sunset High School. He enjoys football, basketball, and driving

Why are you a NPO member?

  • I became a member of our professional organization because having a voice has lead to our success as Nurse Practitioners. Independent practice, payment parity, and the changing of numerous other laws can only be accomplished with a unified force. NPO strives to do this everyday. If you want something to change you have to be part of the force to get it accomplished.

Why should others join NPO?

  • If one is serious and views the practice of a nurse practitioner as a profession, they should be willing and excited to be part of this organization. Every day an NP shows up to work, they are benefiting from the laws we, the Nurse Practitioners of Oregon, have fought so hard to change, language we continue to alter, and battles we strive to accomplish.
