Topics
Pharmacology Update & Review 2019: Focus on Geriatrics
- Pharm Update (1 hour)
- Considerations / precautions when prescribing various primary care drugs in the elderly (2 hrs): Select antibiotics, anxiolytics, sedatives, other psychotropics, analgesics, antidiabetic drugs, CV meds and more.
- Ocular Pharmacology (1 hour): Infections, glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eyes
- Polypharmacy in the elderly (1.5 hr):
- Pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic considerations
- GFR calculations
- Drug Interactions
- Rational drug discontinuation
- Pain Management in the Elderly (1hr)
Continuing Education
Learners can earn 6.5 continuing nursing education contact hours (which includes 6.5 pharmacotherapeutic contact hours).
Oregon Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Requirements for Successful Completion of this CNE Activity
- Sign the Verification of Attendance Form at the registration desk
- Complete and submit the online evaluation form for each session attended by no later than May 6
Participants who successfully complete the above requirements will receive a Certificate of Successful Completion from the Nurse Practitioners of Oregon. Any participant who has NOT completed their evaluation by May 6, 2019 will NOT receive a Certificate of Successful Completion.

About the Speakers
Alan P. Agins, Ph.D.
Alan P. Agins, Ph.D. holds a BS in psychology from the State University of New York (Brockport), a Master’s in Pharmacology & Toxicology and a doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Rhode Island. He has held faculty appointments at Brown Medical School, Northeastern University School of Pharmacy and University of Virginia School of Nursing. During his tenure at Brown, he received the "Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award” for five consecutive years for his outstanding pharmacology lectures. Dr. Agins has also taught graduate & post-graduate pharmacology courses at a number of nursing schools around the country including Penn State, Idaho State, Radford, University of West Virginia and University of Arizona.
Over the past two decades, Dr. Agins has lectured nationally to more than 70,000 advanced practice clinicians and allied health professionals. He is a regularly invited speaker at annual conferences for a number of national, regional and state nursing organizations. Dr. Agins has contributed to various journals, continuing education monographs and pharmacology textbooks as a writer and reviewer. He has authored 3 books and has written and "starred” in a series of entertaining online educational video clips to support nursing pharmacology textbooks (Elsevier). Alan also currently presents weekly live CE webinars for pharmacists through RxSchool (AMN Healthcare), writes a monthly e-Newsletter for Lexi-Comp and makes his wife lunch (to go) every day.
Jody Agins, MSN, FNP-BC, GNP-BC
Jody Agins received her MSN/Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Kansas and is board certified by the ANCC in Family Practice and Gerontology. She is the Founder & Executive Director, and a practicing NP, for Collaborative Medical Provider Group (PLLC), a consortium of private-practice clinicians in Tucson, AZ.
Jody is also the Clinical Services Director for Agape Hospice and Palliative Care and is a primary care provider for CareMore Touch, also in Tucson. In addition, she serves as a clinical preceptor for Family and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner students at several Arizona universities. Jody is invited to speak nationally on pain management, geriatric care and a number of other clinical topics for a variety of NP organizations.
