Program Description
This program is a two part update in clinical pharmacology topics. In part 1: Pharmacology Update 2014, learners will review the latest medication updates pertinent to primary care clinical practice. In part 2: Opioids – Basic and Clinical Pharmacology in Pain Management, learners will explore the basic and clinical pharmacology in opioid pain management.
Purpose
The learner will explore current advanced pharmacotherapeutic options for a variety of medical conditions.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this CNE Activity, the learner will be able to:
Part 1: Pharmacology Update 2014:
- Explain the basic and clinical pharmacology of a minimum of four drugs approved by the FDA in 2013
- List two drugs or classes of drugs that the FDA has issued warnings, concerns or dosage changes
- Discuss recent analyses and thoughts regarding integrating Novel Oral Anticoagulants Into Clinical Practice
- Discuss the new JNC 8 hypertension and AHA/ACC cholesterol guidelines
Part 2: Opioids – Basic and Clinical Pharmacology in Pain Management:
- Review the basic and clinical pharmacology of the opioid analgesics
- Identify important clinical considerations related to managing acute and chronic pain with opioids
- Discuss the rationale for opioid rotation and the newer dosing calculations

About the Speakers
Alan P. Agins, Ph.D. PRN Associates, Ltd
Alan P. Agins, Ph.D. holds a BS in psychology from the State University of New York (Brockport), a Master’s in Pharmacology & Toxicology and a doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Rhode Island. He has held faculty appointments at Brown Medical School, Northeastern University School of Pharmacy and University of Virginia School of Nursing. During his tenure at Brown, he received the "Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award” for five consecutive years for his outstanding pharmacology lectures. Dr. Agins has also taught graduate & post-graduate pharmacology courses at a number of nursing schools around the country including Penn State, Idaho State, Radford, University of West Virginia and University of Arizona.
Over the past 17 years, Dr. Agins has lectured nationally to more than 70,000 advanced practice clinicians and allied health professionals. He is a regularly invited speaker at annual conferences for a number of national, regional and state nursing organizations. Dr. Agins has contributed to various journals, continuing education monographs and pharmacology textbooks as a writer and reviewer. He has authored 3 books and has written and "starred” in a series of entertaining online educational video clips to support nursing pharmacology textbooks (Elsevier). Alan also currently presents weekly live CE webinars for pharmacists through RxSchool (AMN Healthcare), writes a monthly e-Newsletter for Lexi-Comp and makes his wife lunch (to go) everyday.
Jody F. Agins, MSN, RNP, FNP/GNP-BC, WCC PRN Associates, Ltd
Jody F. Agins, MSN, RNP, FNP/GNP-BC, WCC received her MSN/Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Kansas. She has held faculty appointments at the University of Kansas, Truman State University and Arizona State University. Jody Agins is board certified by the ANCC in Family Practice and Gerontology. She is also wound care certified through WCEI. She currently splits her time as a primary care provider for CareMore Touch (Wellpoint), as a private practice NP and as the Clinical Services Director for Agape Hospice in Tucson. She is also President of Seminars for Healthcare Education, Inc and presents lectures locally, regionally and nationally. She is also a clinical preceptor for Family and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner students for University of Phoenix, University of Arizona and Arizona State University and is currently on the editorial board for Clinician Review.
