The 5th Annual Nurse Practitioners of Oregon Pharmacology Update will be held:

  • Saturday, April 11, 2015
  • 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Holiday Inn Wilsonville

Program Description

This program is a three-part update in clinical pharmacology topics: Pharmacology Update, Medical Marijuana, and Psychopharmacology Update.


The learner will explore current advanced pharmacotherapeutic options for a variety of medical and psychiatric conditions. New pharmacologic advances will be examined. 

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this CNE Activity, the learner will be able to:

Part 1: Pharmacology Update 2015

  1. Explain the basic pharmacology of at least three drugs that are unique molecular entities (as opposed to existing drugs with new indications, different dosage formulations or in fixed-dose combinations).
  2. Discuss possible advantages or disadvantages of four new medications compared to existing drugs in the same class.
  3. List newer approved indications for existing drugs.

Part 2: Medical Marijuana

  1. Review the basic and clinical pharmacology of botanical and synthetic marijuana and their active constituents.
  2. List various types and dosage formulations of medical marijuana available to patients.
  3. Discuss a number of possible uses for, and clinical study data regarding, the effectiveness of medical marijuana.
  4. Recognize potential physical and psychiatric side effects and drug interactions that may occur with the use of marijuana.

 Part 3: Psychopharmacology Update

  1. Explain the latest hypotheses regarding cause of depression and newer treatments in the pipeline.
  2. Review second generation antipsychotics with regards to approved uses and basic and clinical pharmacology.
  3. Discuss the pathophysiology of ADHD and the rationale for use of stimulant medications.
  4. Discuss treatment options for anxiety and insomnia.

This program is approved for 6.0 contact hour(s) of continuing education (which includes 6.0 hours of pharmacology) by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Program ID 1501031.

This program was planned in accordance with AANP CE Standards and Policies and AANP Commercial Support Standards.


In order to obtain a Certificate of Successful Completion for this activity, the learner must complete the following criteria:

  • Check-in and sign the Verification of Attendance Form at the registration desk beginning at 7:30 a.m.
  • Complete and submit the online evaluation form within 30 days of the event.

Participants who successfully complete the above requirements will receive a Certificate of Successful Completion from the Nurse Practitioners of Oregon for the contact hours claimed during the evaluation process. Participants should only claim the sessions which were attended in full.

About the Speaker

Alan P. Agins, Ph.D.
PRN Associates, Ltd

Alan P. Agins, Ph.D. holds a BS in psychology from the State University of New York (Brockport), a Master’s in Pharmacology & Toxicology and a doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Rhode Island. He has held faculty appointments at Brown Medical School, Northeastern University School of Pharmacy and University of Virginia School of Nursing. During his tenure at Brown, he received the "Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award” for five consecutive years for his outstanding pharmacology lectures. Dr. Agins has also taught graduate & post-graduate pharmacology courses at a number of nursing schools around the country including Penn State, Idaho State, Radford, University of West Virginia and University of Arizona.

Over the past 17 years, Dr. Agins has lectured nationally to more than 70,000 advanced practice clinicians and allied health professionals. He is a regularly invited speaker at annual conferences for a number of national, regional and state nursing organizations. Dr. Agins has contributed to various journals, continuing education monographs and pharmacology textbooks as a writer and reviewer. He has authored 3 books and has written and "starred” in a series of entertaining online educational video clips to support nursing pharmacology textbooks (Elsevier). Alan also currently presents weekly live CE webinars for pharmacists through RxSchool (AMN Healthcare), writes a monthly e-Newsletter for Lexi-Comp and makes his wife lunch (to go) every day.

Registration may be canceled by written request only. Cancellations must be received by March 31, 2015. An administrative fee of $50 will be deducted from all refunds.
