6th Annual Nurse Practitioners of Oregon Pharmacology Conference

The 6th Annual Nurse Practitioners of Oregon Pharmacology Conference will be held:

  • Saturday, April 2, 2016
  • 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
  • Holiday Inn Wilsonville

Program Description

This program is a three-part update in clinical pharmacology topics: Type 2 Diabetes Review and Update, Psychopharmacology and Cardiovascular Pharmacology Update.

Purpose

The learner will explore current advanced pharmacotherapeutic options for a variety of medical and psychiatric conditions. New pharmacologic advances will be examined.

Objectives

At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to:

Part 1: Type 2 Diabetes Review and Update

  • discuss etiology and pathophysiology of Type 2 DM
  • explain basic and clinical pharmacology of medication classes
  • recognize common side effects of medications

Part 2: Psychopharmacology Update

  • explain current hypothesis regarding cause of depression and anxiety and benefit of newer drugs for treatment
  • describe pathophysiology of ADHD and how medications are used to treat

Part 3: Cardiovascular Pharmacology Update

  • evaluate role of newly approved meds in management of heart failure/ischemic disease
  • compare and contrast basic pharmacology of anticoagulant drug options
  • discuss SPRINT Trial findings and implications for treating HTN

Continuing Education

Learners can earn 6.0 continuing nursing education contact hours (which includes 6.0 pharmacology contact hours).

Oregon Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Evaluation

In order to obtain a Certificate of Successful Completion for this activity, the learner must complete the following criteria:

  • Check-in and sign the Verification of Attendance Form at the registration desk beginning at 7:30 a.m.
  • Complete and submit the online evaluation form within 30 days of the event.

Participants who successfully complete the above requirements will receive a Certificate of Successful Completion from the Nurse Practitioners of Oregon for the contact hours claimed during the evaluation process. Participants should only claim the sessions which were attended in full.

About the Speaker

Alan P. Agins, Ph.D.
PRN Associates, Ltd

Alan P. Agins, Ph.D. holds a BS in psychology from the State University of New York (Brockport), a Master’s in Pharmacology & Toxicology and a doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Rhode Island. He has held faculty appointments at Brown Medical School, Northeastern University School of Pharmacy and University of Virginia School of Nursing. During his tenure at Brown, he received the "Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award” for five consecutive years for his outstanding pharmacology lectures. Dr. Agins has also taught graduate & post-graduate pharmacology courses at a number of nursing schools around the country including Penn State, Idaho State, Radford, University of West Virginia and University of Arizona.

Over the past 17 years, Dr. Agins has lectured nationally to more than 70,000 advanced practice clinicians and allied health professionals. He is a regularly invited speaker at annual conferences for a number of national, regional and state nursing organizations. Dr. Agins has contributed to various journals, continuing education monographs and pharmacology textbooks as a writer and reviewer. He has authored 3 books and has written and "starred” in a series of entertaining online educational video clips to support nursing pharmacology textbooks (Elsevier). Alan also currently presents weekly live CE webinars for pharmacists through RxSchool (AMN Healthcare), writes a monthly e-Newsletter for Lexi-Comp and makes his wife lunch (to go) every day.

NPO is Paperless

In our efforts to be environmentally conscious, NPO is no longer providing paper handouts. All submitted presenter handouts will be posted below two weeks prior to the event. No printed handouts will be available at the event. If you need printed handout materials, please bring them with you.

Registration Fees

  • $100 for NPO/ONA members
  • $150 for non-members
  • $75 for NP Students

Cancellations

Registration may be canceled by written request only. Cancellations must be received by March 18, 2016. An administrative fee of $50 will be deducted from all refunds. Lodging

If you need lodging before or after the event, you can contact the Holiday Inn Wilsonville to reserve a room. NPO has a small number of rooms reserved for the event at a special rate of $99/night (before taxes).
