NPO Independent Practice and Business Owners Workshop:
Top Tips Attorneys Wish Independent Providers Knew


NPO is proud to host a presentation Tuesday, Sept. 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at ONA Headquarters by Paul Cooney and Tom Cooney, lawyers specializing in medical malpractice.

The presentation will feature top tips malpractice attorneys wish independent providers knew, including questions regarding incorporation, informed consent, roles and responsibilities when terminating patients to a higher level of care, and other questions generated by attendees.

Learners will gain knowledge and understanding of some of the legal and regulatory requirements of independent practice, including documentation, HIPAA, mandatory reporting and dealing with difficult situations.

Registration Fees

  • The event is FREE for NPO members
  • Non-members can attend for $30

The following topics will be covered:

  • Documentation in high risk clients (suicidal ideation/past hospitalizations) and the need for coordination of care.
  • HIPAA Breach issues – what to do in the event of a HIPAA Breach.
  • Prescribing issues for non-compliant patients.
  • Mandatory reporting of unprofessional colleagues.
  • The use of apology when you make a mistake, or writing off outstanding bills for dissatisfied patients.
  • Dealing with angry/threatening patients

There will be time for participants to have real-life questions—past, present, or future—answered, so come prepared with legal queries!

Continuing Education

Nurses can earn 1.5 continuing nursing education contact hours for attendance and completion of the evaluation form at the end of the presentation.

Oregon Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
