NPO Scholarship for Students in Nurse Practitioner Education Programs

The Nurse Practitioners of Oregon (NPO) supports the education of our colleagues whether they are RNs seeking to become an NP or an NP who is furthering their education.

The NPO Scholarship (previously known as the NPO Nanette Clapper Memorial Scholarship) was established to support emerging NP leaders and foster the connection to NPO/ONA. The scholarship also is another very tangible way that membership supports the nurse practitioners in Oregon and promotes professional growth of the NP community.

Goals:
  1. To promote the development of future NP leaders.
  2. To promote membership in Nurse Practitioners of Oregon (NPO)/Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) by increasing member benefits.
Amount of the Award:
 
The award is given to one student per academic year in the amount of $5,000 from NPO.
 
Scholarship Criteria
  • Must be an ONA member in good standing and acknowledge the expectation of maintenance of membership and involvement in a leadership position or as a committee member for at least three (3) years after achieving academic goal.
  • Must be enrolled in accredited NP program.
  • Critical element is leadership abilities and experiences.
  • Applicant should have prior/current involvement with a professional organization and will be assigned to a committee of the awardee’s choice or to a leadership position in NPO upon completion of the academic program. Additionally, the awardee is required to attend two (2) NPO meetings during the twelve (12) months immediately following receipt of the scholarship. Attendance can be in person or via conference call.
  • Award Determination will be made after review of application, letter(s) of reference and/or personal interview with NPO leadership (or designee).
  • Presentation of Award is announced at the annual NPO business meeting/educational yearly conference in October (date and location varies) and recipient will be expected to make a presentation at the following year’s event detailing how the scholarship helped the student reach their academic goals.

    • Previous Educational and Work Experience
    • NPO/ONA Experience
    • Anticipated practice following completion of program
    • NP career goal
    • Previous academic accomplishments
    • Prior/current involvement with a professional organization
    • Awards/Honors
    • Please tell us about yourself, your program of study, and what this scholarship means to
      you. (In approximately 500 words)
  2. Three (3) letters of reference, of which two (2) are professional references (one of these MUST be an NPO/ONA member). A submission form for the letters of recommendation will be sent to your references directly or can be accessed at www.nursepractitionersoforegon.org/scholarship-reference
Administration:
 
NPO leadership (or designee) will administer the award and check will be made payable to the awardee’s academic institution for tuition expenses.
 
Application Deadline:
 
Applications for the 2025 Scholarship must be submitted by Aug. 15, 2025

Past Scholarship Winners

2023 NPO Scholarship Winner: Liz Mohr, RN

Julie Foster, NPO Chair, presents the 2023 NPO scholarship to Liz Mohr (right).

NPO awarded the 2023 NPO Scholarship of $5,000 to Liz Mohr! Liz received her BSN from OHSU in 2005 and is currently working on completing her Master of Science Degree at Boise State University. She will complete this degree in 2026 and will obtain certification as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner.
 
Liz has been an active member of ONA since 2006 and has received many accolades for her outstanding work as a critical care and surgical nurse at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene especially during the pandemic. We look forward to welcoming her to the NP profession in the near future.

2022 NPO Scholarship Winner: Rachel Beach, RN

Congratulations to Rachel Beach, RN, who was announced as the recipient of the Nurse Practitioners of Oregon (NPO) Scholarship! Rachel is an ONA member working at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital while she pursues her DNP-FNP at University of Portland. Upon completion of her degree, she plans on continuing her role as an advocate for rural health care while serving the diverse communities of the Columbia Gorge. "I am inspired by the many nurse leaders of the NPO and ONA, and look forward to motivating other nurses, becoming an agent of change, and fulfilling my highest accomplishments as a nurse practitioner."

 

2020 NPO Scholarship Winner: Shelby Freed, FNP-BC

Shelby Freed, FNP-BC receives her virtual award

Congratulations to the 2020 NPO Scholarship winner, Shelby Freed, FNP-BC. She is currently pursuing her DNP at OHSU School of Nursing while working at the OHSU Department of Family Medicine. Upon completion of her degree, she plans to continue her role as an NP, Medical Executive Board (MEB) member, and participant in the APRN Council at OHSU. She also is excited to continue taking an active role in advocacy at the Oregon state legislature to advance health policy and be a part of the NPO Health Policy Committee.
 
Shelby was presented with the award at the virtual NPO Education Conference on Oct. 16 and recognized for all of the great work she is doing.

 

2019 NPO Nanette Clapper Memorial Scholarship Winner: Toy Lim, FNP

One of the 2019 NPO Nanette Clapper Memorial Scholarship for Students in Nurse Practitioner Education Programs has been awarded to Toy Lim, FNP.

Now pursuing her Doctorate of Nursing Practice through OHSU, Lim works as a primary care provider and faculty member at OHSU’s Richmond Clinic

 

2019 NPO Nanette Clapper Memorial Scholarship Winner: Lidija Stjepanovic, RN, BSN

One 2019 NPO Nanette Clapper Memorial Scholarship for Students in Nurse Practitioner Education Programs has been awarded to Lidija Stjepanovic, RN, BSN.

Upon completing her FNP degree, Stjepanovic wants to work as a primary care provider in clinics that focus on underserved people. She looks forward to working with an interdisciplinary team.
