Nurse practitioners (NPs) have been providing high-quality, comprehensive healthcare for more the half a century. NPs play an important role in delivering healthcare as they provide primary and acute care services, as well as mental health and substance abuse care. With their high qualifications and their wide scope of practice in Oregon, NPs can meet most of a patient’s healthcare needs. As physician shortages become more common, especially in rural and medically underserved areas, NPs could play an expanded in providing care to an increasing portion of the population . In Oregon, NPs play a critical role in the provision of services across the state, and their role could fill gaps due to shortages of physicians and other healthcare providers. To better evaluate the role of NPs in providing healthcare to Oregonians, the Nurse Practitioners of Oregon (NPO) has surveyed all licensed NPs in the state of Oregon. This survey, previously conducted in 2012 and again in 2016, explores the demographic profiles and practice characteristics of Oregon’s NP workforce. NPO worked with the Oregon Center for Nursing (OCN) to conduct the 2019 survey. Between March 20 and April 4, 2019, 4,595 NPs licensed by the State of Oregon were invited to participate in the 2019 NPO Survey. The survey was completed by 953 NPs, yielding a response rate of 20.7 percent. The survey was administered electronically via an email invitation by OCN. Responses were submitted electronically, and the data was managed and analyzed by OCN staff. The survey contained questions on a wide range of subjects including demographic characteristics, practice patterns, compensation and third-party reimbursement, and professional issues of Oregon NPs. |
