Federal Home Health Bill Introduced

June 23, 2011 - Earlier this week, Oregon Congressman Greg Walden introduced HR 2267, the Home Health Planning Improvement Act. This important legislation would allow Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Physicians Assistants to order home health services for Medicare beneficiaries. Under current law, only physicians can order home health services, which can result in delays for the patient, interruptions in continuity of care, and increased costs.

Congressman Walden was joined by 25 other members of Congress in introducing this legislation, including Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer, Kurt Schrader, and David Wu. Special thanks to Theresa Russell, an active NPO member in Enterprise, Oregon who asked Congressman Walden for his support.

Earlier this year, S 227, the Senate version of this bill was introduced in the US Senate, with Oregon Senator Ron Wyden as a co-sponsor.

This legislation is a top priority for NPO and for ANA.
