Clackamas Volunteers in Medicine-Founders Clinic

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. Would you like to practice medicine, or support the practice of medicine, in a collegial environment, without the constraints of the too brief appointment, constant phone interruptions, PPO/HMO imposed rules, and worrying about overhead AND serve the "left out” population with low income and no health insurance? Our new Free Clinic, following the national Volunteers in Medicine model, will open November 2011 in our own building on Molalla Avenue in Oregon City. Services will be provided by volunteers. Remember how Marcus Welby MD practiced?

The less than 65 year old uninsured adult population of Clackamas County is estimated at 44,000 and currently no free clinic exists in the county to serve this group. Emergency rooms are the default clinics and no consistent services exist for outpatient ongoing medical care. The Clackamas VIM-Founders Clinic will be a primary care, appointment based, medical home following the national VIM model. VIM clinics include over 80 clinics nationwide, including Bend and Eugene in Oregon.

The Volunteers in Medicine clinics use volunteer professionals and supporting personnel, emphasizing retirees when possible and available.

We need physicians, dentists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, lab personnel, psychologists, and counselors as well as receptionists, intake screeners, translators, medical assistants, and other supporters to share their skills for a few hours per month in a supportive environment with like- minded colleagues. VIM clinics follow a "culture of caring” philosophy. We value not just talking about compassionate care that respects each patient—we live it.

We strongly encourage physicians nearing retirement to participate. Do not drop your medical license (it can be difficult to renew a lapsed license), or at a minimum switch to an Emeritus license that allows volunteer practice only. Non- direct patient care volunteer jobs can be available to physicians who are no longer licensed. MDs and DOs will be credentialed. Liability coverage will be provided for those without their own coverage. Physicians who retired in Oregon with CNA insurance can obtain coverage for volunteer services for $100/year.

Join our team and feel good about yourself as you serve the vulnerable members of our community! Please e-mail, call, or write for our volunteer application.
