Opioid and Pain Management CEs from AANP and NIDA
March 20, 2014 - The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) has collaborated with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to launch two continuing education (CE) programs that provide practical guidance for nurse practitioners about screening pain patients for substance use disorder risk factors before prescribing, and identifying when patients are abusing their medications.

These two programs—now live in the AANP CE Center—use patient-clinician video vignettes to model effective communication strategies for discussing sensitive issues with your patients.

The Safe Prescribing for Pain module* (1.25 CE hours/ 1 pharm hour) demonstrates skills necessary to screen for and prevent drug abuse in patients with pain. The Managing Pain Patients who Abuse Rx Drugs module* (1.75 CE hours/ 1 pharm hour) highlights the symptoms and prevalence of opioid addiction and dependence in patients with chronic pain and the steps that nurse practitioners can take to screen for, prevent, and treat these conditions.

Visit the AANP CE Center to practice your clinical skills with these test and teach-style modules and visit the NIDAMED website for a host of other resources about drug abuse and addiction for you and your patients.
