Meg Portwood, MN, NP has received the prestigious American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) 2015 State Award for Excellence, recognizing her as an NP who has exemplified professionalism and expertise in health care for generations of coastal residents, mentoring and helping many other nurse practitioners throughout her career."

From the archives of Oregon Nurse, ONA’s 1992 September edition carried an article highlighting her challenges along the way. The article was entitled “Struggles Continue for Nurse Practitioners,” which chronicled Portwood’s professional efforts from 1986 to May 1992, as she met with and petitioned, hospital administrators, department heads and the board of directors at North Lincoln hospital in to work to the full extent of her practice. Delivering primary care to patients included the necessity of ordering labs, X-rays, EKGs and Ultrasound tests and Portwood was being blocked. She wrote “the Board tried to compel us to have a physician supervisor but we refused based on our independent practice rights.” In April 1992, The Oregon State Board of Nursing finally helped resolved the issue by submitting a letter to the hospital board stating that such privileges were “well win the scope of practice of Oregon’s FNP practice.” Meg then recognized the advocacy of community members, hospital volunteers and ONA’s role in putting pressure on the hospital board as key components in facilitating the policy change.

Because she was unable to accept her award in person, during the national conference June 9-14, 2015 in New Orleans, AANP Region X Director Tracy Ann Klein, PhD, FNP, ARNP, FAANP, FRE, FAAN traveled to Lincoln City, Tuesday, August 4, 2015, to present Meg’s award.

Klein said, “Meg has spent her career shaping legislation that helped make my career and future practice better by writing letters to the Oregon Legislature and serving on the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) Formulary Committee, which discusses and reviews FDA approved drugs for nurses with prescriptive authority. She has also spent decades serving Oregon as a preceptor, guiding new NPs as they complete their practice requirements.”

She continued “Meg, thank you from AANP, from Oregon and from me, for all your years of mentorship and care to your patients. It is truly an honor to call you a colleague and friend.”

Meg Portwood grew up in Portland, earned a master’s degree in nursing has served the northern coast for over 38 years, as a family nurse practitioner at Coastal Health Practitioners in Lincoln City. Local news reporter, Jeremy Ruark added this comment when notified of her award, “We’re so lucky to have her in our community!’
