Call for Patients for Study on Insulin Dependent T2DM

NPO member Seth Merritt, FNP, has partnered with WSU Vancouver DNP program in a study that will attempt to successfully reduce or remove the need for insulin therapy in T2DM patients and they are seeking patients to participate in the study.

The study is seeking a total of 10 patients to participate, so if you have patients that meet the criteria that would like to be involved in this program, please contact Oliver Uy at oliver.uy@wsu.edu.

Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes: an Intervention for those with Insulin Dependent T2DM

(A DNP Project designed by Oliver Uy, Ciara Smith, Merritt Health and Wellness, LLC)

Who

Patients with insulin dependent T2DM who are ready/willing to implement evidence based lifestyle recommendations in regards to dietary and exercise changes, as well as enhance their understanding of T2DM and the effects of this disease on the human body.

What

Eight-week course designed as an interactive lecture where patients will receive structured education regarding:

  1. Basic Pathophysiology of T2DM
  2. Dietary Changes that can impact glycemic control
  3. Micro/Macro Vascular complications of T2DM
  4. Benefits of physical activity along with recommendations
  5. Ways to sustain changes

When

Class will start January 2017 and meet weekly on Monday nights from 6-7:30 pm

Why

The purpose of this program is twofold:

  1. To successfully reduce or remove the need for insulin, while maintaining or improving glycemic control, in patients through intensive education regarding lifestyle changes; and
  2. Measure understanding of basic disease process, dietary changes and the impact on the management of diabetes, and ways to sustain changes. It is also geared to promote a more thorough understanding of T2DM for the patients and give them tools necessary to sustain such positive lifestyle changes.
