Getting to Know Our NPO Members

Who are you?

Jen Barr, DNP, FNP-C

Where did you study?

I obtained a bachelor's degree in Spanish from Oregon State University and then completed my Bachelor's of Science in Nursing at the University of Portland. In 2014, I graduated from the University of Portland with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice as a family nurse practitioner.

I'm currently completing a post-master's certificate program at Texas Tech University Health Science Center for acute care pediatric nurse practitioners.

Where do you practice and what’s your specialty?

I currently practice at Doernbecher Children's Hospital and OHSU as the nurse practitioner for the Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Surgery team.

How long have you been a member of NPO?

I've been a member of ONA since 2011 and started as a student member of NPO in 2010!

What previous leadership roles have you had with ONA/NPO?

I currently serve as the secretary for NPO. In the past, have served on ONA's Cabinet on Health Policy and ONA’s Political Action Committees. I've also served as a unit steward on the labor side of ONA.

What is one thing you’d be willing to share that others may not know?

I'm a certified scuba diver and recently completed my Lionfish Hunter sub-specialty so I can help clear the reefs of these invasive species!! I also teach archery at Merry Heart Children's Camp, a week long summer camp for kids with congenital heart defects.

Why are you a NPO member?

I love being part of NPO because it keeps me updated on what's happening at the state level in terms of policy and legislation that affects my practice and license. Additionally, I love being connected to other NPs across the state that practice in different settings than I do!

Why should others join NPO?

For both of the reasons listed above! NPs in the state of Oregon have enjoyed full practice authority since the 1970s, but that doesn't mean we can be complacent. We have to continue fighting to keep our practice rights and protect our patients from dangerous legislation.
