Attendees will learn how to assess and manage both immediate and long-term medical needs, including evaluating patients for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) per the latest CDC guidelines, treating and testing for sexually transmitted infections, and management of non-fatal strangulation. The session also covers how to recognize and respond to the lasting physical and psychological effects of sexual assault and when to involve forensic nurse examiners.

303- Chronic Pain Management (Lunch Session)

This presentation will focus on empowering participants to expand and enhance their knowledge of chronic pain and they might integrate this to better navigate their patient’s journey and reduce provider frustration in this realm. The three categories of pain: nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic will be reviewed and the dynamic relationship between them will be explored at length. We will focus on an enhanced diagnosis of central sensitization (or primary pain), how it appears at different stages of life, and a review of strategies to engage patients on the topic and how to improve its diagnosis and management. Particular attention will be paid towards improving understanding the co-morbid role it can play with other inflammatory conditions. This knowledge will provide a toolkit to be applied to helping patients navigate specialty care via a shared decision-making model, ideally reducing both unnecessary procedures and long-term opioid use. Focus will be paid on the latter, and how pain phenotype can be co-morbid with opioid use disorder. Finally, as pain is often identified as a source of burnout in primary care, implementing such a skillset has significant potential to increase resiliency and job satisfaction.

305- COPD in Primary Care: A review of 2025 GOLD Guidelines & key points on diagnosis, assessment and management

COPD is one of the top three causes of death worldwide, accounting for 6% of all death globally. It is projected to increase in coming decades because of continued exposure to COPD risk factors and an aging population. This discussion will aim to review changes to the 2025 Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Diseases (GOLD) guidelines, and aid in appropriate methods to assess, diagnose, and treat people with COPD. It will also review recommendations that reduce the risk of adverse health events that may affect patients in the future. This discussion will focus on short-term and long-term impacts of COPD on patients and their families.
